It’s her birthday, or it’s your anniversary, or it’s the holiday season or you’re feeling thoughtful. In any case, you want to give your significant other a gift.
Thanks to the lovely ladies and gentlemen of Reddit, we’ve compiled a list of thoughtful presents your girlfriend or wife really wants. You know, besides flowers — which are way better when they’re NOT given on a holiday, FWIW.
Check out a few of the gifts they loved getting most below.
1. A reserved parking spot.
“For Christmas, my son gave his girlfriend (now fiance) a reserved parking space in the city. (He leases the space in the alley of a homeowner.) She works crazy hours as a med student on rotations and would come home late at night exhausted, then have to drive for 30 minutes to find parking. Now she is grateful to him every day when she parks her car and has a safe, short walk to her apartment.” — Reddit user Gin_Wren
2. A sweet weekend getaway.
“Sometimes I go sentimental, like a lot of other people are suggesting. But a lot of the time, I find the best present to be an experience. If you have the money, take her on a small holiday. Even just a day trip somewhere real nice could be enough.” — sillywillies
3. A little help with packing.
“I was going on a girls trip to Thailand and was really busy beforehand. He bought me a vacation package full of sunscreen for my face and body, aloe vera, spf lip gloss, a book to read on the beach, travel size toiletries, travel converter, gum, flip flops, bug spray, and some small first aid things.” — BadToaster2014
4. A case of beer and/or bottle of wine.
“A crate of one of my favourite beers, which I’d told him had been discontinued. He was very proud of himself for finding it, and I had to explain that it had only been discontinued on tap. But I was still very happy with 24 bottles of it :)” — Nashamanga
5. Taking the time to learn their native or also-used language.
“He secretly started learning sign language for me. I’m deaf. I can talk (because my mum rocks) and I lipread. He’s learning sign language mainly for when we’re in busy places or if I’m tired :)” — Sezrawr
6. Muti-faceted jewelry.
“For our first wedding anniversary, he bought me a cute heart-shaped necklace that opens up to a 64gb USB stick inside.
It’s a little heavy, but I use it all the time. People get really excited when they see me pull my necklace apart and stick it in a computer, and I feel like a spy from a movie or something.” — Prolixdreams
7. Straws, or other under the radar things.
“Two weeks ago my wife and I were at a fast food restaurant, and she asked me to grab a couple of extra straws that she could have for her smoothies at home (were students and recently moved, not everyhing is in order at our place). I did, and while she didn’t say anything about buying straws or anything I made a mental note of getting her straws somehow (since I’m not very good with mental notes, the actual mental note was “write this down you forgetful buffoon!”). Two days ago I bought a big bunch of straws, put them all in a vase, and wrote a reeeally short and reeeeally simple poem about a new type of bouquet I invented with a new type of flowers.” — DullestWall
8. A jar full of love notes.

“One Christmas I got a jar filled with little notes from my current boyfriend. All notes said things like ‘You’re beautiful’, ‘I’m so glad I met you’, ‘You’re my everything’ and things like that. It was one of the sweetest things I’ve ever gotten.” — Cloodizard
9. Something related to her interests.
“Listen to her, if she says she likes Harry Potter, get her something Harry Potter related. If she’s having a bad day, buy her chocolate or flowers. If she really loves you she won’t expect you to empty your pockets for her. It’s the small, random gestures that mean the most.” — _Dazzled_
10. Doing all of the chores. All of them.
“Instead of getting her a gift, maybe just silently do all of the house chores. You may or may not live together, but if you do.. you probably have divided chores among the two of you… do hers and yours one day.
Don’t make a big deal of it.. do the dishes, fold the laundry, scrub the bathroom and kitchen… clean the damn house. If you can sneak out of work before her, do all of this without “getting caught”. The surprise on her face when she gets home will make it all worth while.” — HelpMeLoseMyFat
11. A cute comic written about them.
“We were in high school so he didn’t have much money. He commissioned an artsy classmate to illustrate a comic. I’m sure he didn’t pay her much, but she was happy to make some cash doing something she liked to do, and they sat down together and came up with a great story. It was an adventure tale about my beloved cat and I. I loved it and years later, I still have it and think fondly of him for thinking of such a creative gift!” — Tresor14
12. Baked goods of any kind.
“My SO baked me a blue birthday cake for my 20th. It had so much dye in it it stained anything it touched and gave us tummy aches. It was so thoughtful though, I loved it!” — 23dovahkin
13. A balloon-filled room.
“For my birthday one year he bought a machine to inflate balloons, then proceeded to fill our bedroom with over a thousand balloons (seriously floor to damn near ceiling with balloons) then hid my presents in the chaos and when I got home from work I was overwhelmed at the time he spent doing that.” — NLCoolJ6112
14. Her favorite shampoo.
“My long distance ex mentioned, once, that her favorite brand of shampoo was no longer being sold. So I found some bottles online and sent them to her house with a pretty note. She said it was the most thoughtful thing she’s ever gotten.” — DeathToPennies
15. A book signed by her favorite author.
“First Christmas together: a hardcover book, signed by one of my favourite authors. I never knew I wanted it, but the minute I laid eyes on it I knew he was perfect.” — Towawayzone_
“My boyfriend kept all of our tickets and maps and receipts from our euro trip and made me a scrapbook with our pictures and all of the things we had collected along the way. I cried. Twice.” — lalaland87
17. A crazy adventure
“For her 21st I booked her a meet a cheetah session at the zoo, where you can go in and pat cheetahs for a while. She’s always LOVED big cats and even dreamed of working in South Africa at some point as a vet. She absolutely loved it. Then we spent the rest of the morning going through the zoo together and just having a really good time.” — sillywillies
